PREVENTION OF POST-OPERATIVE ADHESIONS: (European Patent - 1994)
Development of a biodegradable substance which prevents post-operative adhesions in organs.
The project consisted of two phases:
- In rats: (completed in 1992).
This phase made it possible to select the substance, define its optimum presentation and to study its efficacy in rats.
- In pigs: This phase studied the efficacy of this product in preventing pericardial and abdominal adhesions.
Twelves pigs underwent surgery: six controls and six other pigs which received the product.
Results: one death in the control group (an anaesthesia-related adverse event).
One death at D8 in the group with a patch (haemorrhagic colitis). An autopsy showed good presentation of the patch with no adhesion, nor inflammatory reaction.
The surviving animals all were verified at month two.
The control group (5 pigs): the adhesions were severe (grade IV) in the pericardial and abdominal positions.
Group with the patch (5 pigs): results are satisfactory. No abdominal adhesion (group 0), on the contrary in the heart, adhesions varied (groups 0 and 1).
Experiment was completed in 1993.
Application for a patent submitted in December 1993.
A European Patent was obtained on 8 June 1994
Marketing in 1994 (WAHK 88 Patch –Baxter and Coletica Laboratory).
THE STENTLESS PORCINE VALVE:
Development of a pulmonary porcine valve with no reinforced support medium in the (pulmonary) ring with a removable collarette.
Experimentation in pigs completed in 1993.

Marketing in September 1995 by Tissuemed Laboratory -Leeds-UK: “Tissuemed-Khoury Valve”.
THE PERI-CARDIAL FL VALVE WITH A RESORBABLE STENT.
A heart valve manufactured contemporaneously with the patient’s native pericardium and mounted on a resorbable stent support medium.
Experiment started in 1994: Faculty of Medicine LYON – Laboratory of experimental surgery.
